Wonderful life lesson

This is a poem in Mahabharata, it gives us a very important life lesson.  It is in Telugu, hence writing about it in Telugu first.  The meaning and explanation in English would follow.

ఒరులేయవి యొనరించిన
నరవర! యప్రియము తన మనంబునకు తా
నొరులకవి సేయకునికియె
పరాయణము పరమ ధర్మ పధముల కెల్లన్

గరికపాటి వారి ఉపన్యాసం లో ఈ పద్యాన్ని విన్నాను. అంతర్జాలం లో వెతికితే ఇది ధృతరాష్టృడు విదురునిని నీతి బోధించ మని అడిగితే, విదురుడు ఈ పద్యాన్ని చెప్పారని తెలిసింది.

దీని భావం : ‘ఎవరు ఏమి చేస్తే నీకు అప్రియం అనిపిస్తుందో అదే పని నీవు ఇతరుల విషయంలో చేయకు’

ఎంత గొప్ప నీతి , మనకు ఎవరైన ఏది చేయకూడదనుకుంటామో అది మనము ఇంకొకరి పట్ల చేయకూడదు. అదియే మనకు పరమధర్మము. చిన్న మాట లా కనపడినా లోక హితాన్ని ఇచ్చే పద్యం కదా ఇది. మనని మిగతా వారు ఎల చూడలి అని కోరుకుంటామో మనం కూడా వారిని అలాగే చూడాలి, సమత్వం పాటించాలి, మనని ఎవరూ ఇబ్బంది పెట్టకూడదని అనుకుంటాము కదా, అలాగే మనం కూడా ఎవరినీ ఇబ్బంది పెట్టకూడదు. గొప్ప నీతి కదా.

Dhrutarashtra father of Duryodhana once asks his younger brother Vidura to say some good words about Dharma.  Vidura then speaks about the “Parama Dharma”(most important/righteous duty) for the Humans.  Vidura says “We should avoid doing things which we donot want others to do to us.”  Well, the way I put it might be confusing.  Here is the elaboration.  We all hate somethings which others do to us. For example, we might hate the way they treated us, we might hate the way they played politics with our lives , we might hate the way some people backbite about us, we might the way people look down on us etc…   The list would be long. Vidura says, avoid doing those things to others, the ones you donot like being done to you.

We must not do things to others which we do not like when others do to us.  We do not want to be ill-treated right, so we must not ill treat others, we do not want to be victims of politics we should not play politics with others too, we do not want to be looked down upon by anyone then we too should not look down anyone. Simply put do not do that thing to others which you would not like when done to you.  Nice moral isn’t it?
