Our Iceberg is Melting

If there is anything that is permanent in this world it is change and if there is one thing that people indeed abhor in their lives  it is change. Interesting paradox isn’t it ?  One of the toughest things in this world is change,  isn’t it?  I always believe that we are genetically programmed to resist change. We normally love our comfort zones and we never want to move away from them.  If adapting to a change in itself can be so tough at the individual level, imagine  how tough driving the change can be.   This is one of the reasons why change management and change managers are so important for the corporates.

Recently I had been to a company called Invesco, I saw a book review section on one of the posters there. (How cool is it ? Our Iceberg is Melting A company encouraging its employees to do the book reviews.)  There I saw the title “Our Iceberg is Melting”.  I liked the title and soon had the book on my Kindle.

This awesome book by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber is about “Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions“.   Like many of the very good contemporary books that use fables to convey a great point this book too uses a fable and leaves us with a great message.  The story happens in Antarctica where a colony of penguins are happily living on an iceberg.  As it happens with most stories there is a threat that is looming on this colony.   How do they face this crisis ? Who identifies this ?  How will the leadership team fight  this ?  How will they handle the opposition that comes up are all some awesome things that you can read in this book.

What happens when you have to lead a change?  What are the problems that come up ? How should you handle them?  How should a change management team be formed? How  should the leadership behave? What sorts trouble makers can come up and how should the leadership handle them ? The book and the fable answer all these questions in a very innovative way.

One thing I really really liked is “The Eight Step Process of Successful Change” that is given at the end of the book. It is very very useful information and has a practical step by step process to handle change.  Then the Role of “Thinking and Feeling” while handling a change is also given here in a very nice way.

I liked the book, in fact I believe that this is a book that must be read and re-read.  It can be of immense help while handling change.  In this fast paced world that is innovating and inventing constantly the only thing we can be sure of is change and this book helps us in handling it and succeeding in our lives.  Do read the book, it is a must read for everyone in the corporate world.  I am not exaggerating when I say that this is a must read. We are in changing times and handling it correctly can make or break our lives.  That is the most important reason why we need to read this book and learn a thing or two about handling the change. Do read the book. It is a must read.
