Bhagavadgita and The Russian Controversy

It is unfortunate that some people in Russia have gone to court to get a ban on Bhagavad-Gita the holy text which has provided light to millions and is motivating millions of people around the planet to lead their lives in good and Godly manner.

It seems a group linked to the Christian Orthodox Church has described Bhagavad-Gita  as ‘extremist’, with the Russian authorities, this started the proceedings in the court. The Wikipedia page regarding this says that the court has also consulted some experts from Kemerovo state university for an expert opinion on this case , the irony here is that none of them are experts in Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism.

Stopping ISCKON and Hare Krishna movement seem to the clandestine motives behind the trial initiated by the orthodox Church , we cannot be sure though , but treating Bhagavad-Gita  as “extremist” book  and putting it in the same category of  Adolf Hitler’s mien kempf is definitely disturbing. It is completley unacceptable.  Many people mistakenly believe that as Sri Krishna asked Arjuna to fight the battle of Kurukshetra, Bhagavad-Gita is pro-war and anti peace , but it is not the case , when Arjuna is in a dilemma and says that he will not to war against the evil alliance led by Duryodhana , Sri Krishna only asks Arjuna to  do his duty as a warrior prince , Sri Krishna asks him to discharge his duty as a protector of dharma , as a protector of his clan and his people it was the duty of Arjuna to fight the enemy and ensure that the good survives and the bad is eliminated.

Tomorrow , (God forbid ) but just for the sake of an example , incase there is some disturbance due to some anti-national elements near the Russian border and if a Russian soldier guarding the borders , says “I donot want to fight a fellow  Russian  even though he is anti-national” will the Russian government accept ? In case a Major or a general explains to the soldier that , saving the nation and protecting the sovereignty of Russia is more important and hence he should fight the insurgent even if he is Russian, can the government or court declare that the general or major in question fostered violence???

It is very easy to get emotional on subjects of this type, we need to understand that this whole episode is a work of some handful people who wanted and created some communal hatred , and not the entire Russian brethren, hence blaming Russia squarely for this also is not good. Even the ones who created this trouble might have been misguided by the situation in which Bhagavad-Gita has been told by the Lord. Bhagavad-Gita focuses on duty , duty and duty , it asks us to do our duty in the best manner possible and leave the rest to God,There are many many other wonderful things discussed in the 700+slokas of the book.It does not ask you to follow any superstitions or any meaningless rituals,(I am making this explicit point because I saw some comments where people were ascribing some logic-less stuff to Bhagavad-Gita) it asks every human being to aspire , practice and become a good person. It shows the path to live a fruitful life. One blog post is never sufficient to write the merits of Bhagavad-Gita . If a nation bans such a great book ,it is not disservice to the Bhagavad-Gita, Bhagavad-Gita and its merits are already proven, but it is disservice to the nation and its people who ban it.Hope Russian brothers understand the message of the book in the true spirit.

I too am with you and feel it is work of Christian Orthodox Church, who did not understood true message of Gita.

thank you Shashi for the comment, yes the secret motives are too visible to hide .

Thanks for the Illuminating blog Subbu…

Literally what message BhagavadGita is divulging is none of Russians’ business. They don’t have in-depth knowledge on our sacred history. Indians-especially Hindus never force anybody to believe these ancient Puranas. They never try to impose Hinduism on others. Others, whoever liked Hinduism, they came to India, spent with our great saints and studied their biographies.

Better that church people(who abused the holy message of the Book) meet Chaganti Koteswararao garu or listen to the clarifications already given by Sri.Puranapanda Dikshithulu (Ushasri). Let them take an open challenge to defeat us with their arguments.

In fact we should file a case against that group who are trying to mislead court with their false fantasy. It is very clear that they are deliberately trying to bring disturbances. Soon they will realize-that all their effort is in vain..!!

      Valli garu ,
can’t agree more with you, very very nice comment. I feel the ones who registered the complaint might have never read Gita, they must have been thoroughly brainwashed by their masters that Gita is anti-christian and is filled with extremism. Or as the Wikipedia page suggests the secret motive must have been to stop Hare Krishna movement from spreading . See the irony, the Church argues for freedom of religion when they convert people in India ,see what the orthodox Church is doing when there is a threat of some one is leaving Christianity .
